A Slash from the Past: Scream (2022) Review

Updated: May 11, 2023

Scream, the quintessential meta horror franchise, is back with a vengeance in it's fifth installment entitled, 'Scream'. The film's meta commentary is as brutal as its killer(s) and 'Scream' is one of the only franchises that can get away with having a fifth instalment in a twenty-five-year-old franchise that also ruthlessly criticizes Hollywood for rehashing old brands. It's only fitting seeing as a motif running through the series is that the past is always in play, for better or worse, with Ghostface acting as a literal representation of a metaphorical ghost from the past.

Scream (2022) is the franchise at it's best. The film is an effective slasher who-done-it further elevated by a sharp script. There is an equal amount of laughs and carnage which is a requisite for 'Scream' fans . The film also includes plenty of nods to the other films for fans while introducing some fresh ideas and twists.

The charismatic cast of newcomers take the center stage in Scream (2022) and returning legacy characters are there this time around as support. This installment is the first without the late horror icon Wes Craven behind the camera., but Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett tautly honor Craven's legacy while carving out their own.

RATING: 4/5 Stars

If you plan of viewing 'Scream' in theaters, I highly recommend checking out the previous installments as well which are available at our very own Brown Deer Public Library

You can find them here.
