‘Bodies, Bodies, Bodies’ revolves around a group of Gen Zers who get together at one of their wealthy parents mansions and play the Gen Z version of a murder mystery dubbed 'bodies, bodies, bodies'- then things go horribly wrong.
‘Bodies, Bodies, Bodies’ is a well crafted who-done-it with a strong cast. It is also a scathing rebuke of Gen Z. This aspect of the film I’m ambivalent about because of its ham-fisted approach toward criticisms of Gen Z. The characterizations and dialogue more often than not feel like how Boomers perceive Gen Z than how Gen Z is, which undercuts the films more potent critiques about our society’s disconnect with each other. It’s even more of a shame because a Gen Xer directed the film and a Millennial wrote it- both have apparently reached that precipice where they ignorantly and arrogantly proclaim how terrible the new generation is.
Comparing ‘Bodies, Bodies, Bodies’ to ‘Scream’ is almost an insult to ‘Scream’ (1996 or 2022) because while those films do critique Gen X and Gen Z respectively, the characters in those films were smart and sympathetic.
The synth pop score is fun and creepy, elements of it reminded me of ‘It Follows’. The use of motivated lighting not only adds to the visual aesthetic, but is reflective of the characters psychological states. The use of variety of flashlights as lighting for parts of the film create an atmosphere of claustrophobia and further highlight a sense of disconnect between the characters.
‘Bodies, Bodies, Bodies’ is a well-made film with one of the best twists In recent memory, but I have my reservations about its tone deaf approach towards its criticism of Gen Z.
