Film Review Bits: 2010s' Family Films

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Hugo

Released 2011

Based on the children's book of the same name, Martin Scorsese directs a film outside of his wheelhouse with astounding results. This Best Picture nominee is led by a brilliant ensemble cast that includes child acting prodigies Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz. Underneath the gorgeous production design, the magical score, the whimsical fantasy, is a love letter to cinema.

Christopher Robin

Released 2018

'Christopher Robin' captures all the wit and whimsy of the best of Winnie the Pooh stories. The voice cast is absolutely brilliant and Ewan McGregor's heartfelt performance as the titular character guides us through the emotional gamut that is this film

Mary Poppins Returns

Released 2018

'Marry Poppins Returns' is everything one could ask for in a sequel to the classic 'Mary Poppins.' This film is so good I actually prefer it to the original. A dazzling performance by Emily Blunt honors Julie Andrews' original outing and one couldn't ask for a better soundtrack that's prime architect was Tony Award Winner Lin Manuel Miranda.
