Film Review Bits - Slasher Edition

Updated: Dec 5, 2022

Hellraiser

Released 1987

'Hellraiser' is a twisted, atmospheric gore fest that deftly explores the concept of pleasure and pain while introducing horror icon 'Pinhead' played by the scene stealing Doug Bradley.

Child's Play

Released 1988

Don't let the title fool you- 'Child's Play' is a possessed doll horror film and is not for children. It is however a taut and dark humored slasher gem that came out at the tail end of the ‘80s slasher renaissance

Scream

Released 1996

Relive (or enjoy for the first time) 'Scream', the chillingly-clever ‘90s meta horror classic that not only spawned several surprisingly sharp sequels, but is responsible for the slasher revival of the mid 90s.

Halloween: H20

Released 1998

'Halloween: H20' is one of the more fun - and overall better - Halloween sequels. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode for the first time since 'Halloween II' in this shamelessly post-modern fright-fest that owes its existence to 'Scream'

Hatchet

Released 2006

Though 'Hatchet' was released in 2006, where one was more likely to see a remake than an original slasher, this is a grisly throwback to the glory days of the ‘80s slasher.

You're Next

Released 2011

'You're Next' is a skillfully crafted, clever, home invasion thriller- full of slasher mayhem and female empowerment.

The Brown Deer Library has plenty of slasher films available to check out for the morbidly curious.
