The aughts were the early days of motion caption technology, and most animated features refrained from using it. ‘Monster House’ was an exception. A lot of creativity and ingenuity went into this often overlooked animated gem. The art direction is sublime even if some of the animation looks a little rough sixteen years later.
‘Monster House’ stands out for its darker tone, more mature themes, and deft blend of horror and comedy, while retaining the wit and whimsy of the best animated films. Its earthy color palate sets the mood that it is the perfect fall film, It is also a gateway film for future horror film addicts.
Fun fact, one of the writers of this fantastic script is Brown Deer’s own Dan Harmon who went on to create the cult classic TV series “Community” as well as the irreverent sci-fi animated comedy “Rick and Morty.”
