‘Ted Lasso’ is a feel good television series about a former American football coach, played by Jason Sudeikis, who is asked to coach a British Soccer team.
In a world so bitter and divisive, with every other movie and TV show portraying an understandable albeit bleak modernity or future for humanity, ‘Ted Lasso’ may be the hero we really need and the feel-good show we need. The series in an incredibly effective dramedy because amongst all the banter, light heartedness, and one liners are dynamic characters, plenty of grounded drama, and incredible character growth. The emotional punches and comedic elements are handled and delivered with such precision that they complement each other to the maximum affect. Jason Sudeikis plays the titular character with all the smiles and gusto that it will inspire viewers to stay positive, like Ted himself, even when it isn’t easy.
I have always been a fan of mixing highbrow and lowbrow humor because their juxtaposition adds another layer that makes each respective humor style stronger. ‘Ted Lasso’ exemplifies the best of this brand of humor. There is something inherently funny about a character that is undeniably sharp as a tack but still delivers dad jokes and country colloquialisms. The series also has to be a blast for the writers because of all the creative and organic ways they are allowed to insert all sorts of quips, puns, and word play.
“If that's a joke, I love it. If not, can't wait to unpack that with you later.”
Jason Sudeikis may be the lead character but the brilliant ensemble hold their own against his charismatic character. The cast is truly a team and every one of them gets to shine comedically and dramatically at various points.
‘Ted Lasso’ is most impressive because of its deft blend of comedy and drama. The comedy highs never feel farcical because they occur naturally within the narrative. The drama is dynamic and parceled out when it's relevant to the story so it rarely if ever feels overbearing, cliché, or unrealistic. The show also addresses topical issues regarding mental health.
Although there are currently only two seasons of Ted Lasso streaming with a third on its way, it is one of the best modern shows airing. I see it joining the ranks of comedy classics like 'Taxi', 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show', 'The Simpsons', 'Seinfeld', '30 Rock,' and so forth.
MY RATING 4.25/5 STARS
