'Thor: Love and Thunder' A Review

Updated: Nov 1, 2022

Director /writer Taika Waititi returns to helm ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ after directing fan favorite ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ which reinvigorated the franchise in tone and aesthetics. The film is breezy, funny, and heartfelt. While some of the novelty has worn off, Waititi’s style and humor are double-downed on and reinforced, for better or worse. It is more enjoyable if you accept that it is a comedy (and like comedies).

‘Love and Thunder’ is a highly entertaining, consistently creative, and a visually arresting film but it not without faults. Humor occasionally undercuts poignant dramatic moments and there are points where the break neck pace of the film makes it feel rushed. Both are frequently occurring problems in modern superhero films as well as blockbusters in general and the former has been a common criticism for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chris Hemsworth, who returns as the titular Thor, leads a charismatic ensemble that includes Taika Waititi himself as Korg, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.

Christian Bale enters the MCU as the infamous villain Gorr the God Butcher. Early criticism of the MCU was that great villains were scarce, but since phase three, those criticisms have been ameliorated. Bale's earie and ruthless portrayal of Gorr continues the trend of dynamic MCU villains.

If you have grown tired of the MCU by this point, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ won’t win you over, but the film is worthy to be part of the acclaimed cinematic behemoth that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
