‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ marks the seventh Transformers film and the second film without Michael Bay at the helm to direct. This has proven to be a positive for these films cohesiveness as well as the storytelling aspect of the series.
There are quite a few exhilarating action sequences in ‘Rise of the Beasts’ but they never reach the franchise highs when Bay was behind the camera. The film is also a stepdown from 2018’s solo ‘Bumblebee' film, but it is still a step in right direction for the film series. Although it is a standalone film, it does connect to Michael Bay’s films as well as the Bumblebee film.
The special effects and action sequences have typically been a highlight of the series and 'Rise of the Beasts' is no different in that regard. The special effects aren't just top of the line, but unlike some of Bay's previous entries, the action is coherent and visuals are smooth.
'Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' sympathetic main characters help ground the narrative. The filmmakers also imbue the transformers with pathos that adds even more emotional weight to the story. The film's exploration of the themes of sacrifice and working together contribute to making it a stronger entry in the franchise, and even help elevate as well as tie it to the original film's ‘no sacrifice, no victory’ mantra.
‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ should please franchise fans and provide the movie going audience with unexpectedly sentimental popcorn entertainment that is fun even if forgettable.
