‘Turning Red’ is a welcome addition to Pixar’s pantheon of premium grade films. The story revolves around a tween who turns into a giant red panda when she gets excited. Lately, Pixar has been moving away from photo realistic computer generated imagery , but they in no way sacrifice their signature high quality story telling or artistic ingenuity.
‘Turning Red’ marks the first time in Pixar history that the entire head creative team are women which should have been commonplace decades ago considering how much women have contributed to film. In the earliest days of film, for example, editors were primarily women. Different perspectives and approaches towards filmmaking are only going to innovate the process and invite audiences in on fresh, diverse storytelling. That is evident in spades in ‘Turning Red.’
‘Turning Red’ is a pretty blunt allegory for young girls going through puberty and the filmmakers approach the narrative with such wit, creativity, and energy its thoroughly engaging, funny, and enjoyable for any age. The story takes place circa 2002, so there are plenty of nods to and riffs on that era . if you were in middle school around that time as I was the film may have you feeling a bit nostalgic.
MY RATING 4/5 STARS
