Maybe you have absolutely no idea where to start but have always wanted to try being a writer. Maybe you want to write the great American novel or you thought you'd write a poem about hidden life of a grain of sand. Maybe you just need a little inspiration to get you started or you find yourself just a little stuck. Maybe you find yourself trying to break out of your comfort zone or mix things up at work. Whatever your reason for landing here, practicing a little creativity can impact your life in ways you didn't expect.
But let's be honest. Creativity is a muscle and it needs exercise to work properly. That's where this series comes in. With any luck, this series will get your creative juices flowing and get you thinking in ways you hadn't before. A new prompt will appear once or twice a week. It's up to you what you do with it.
Oh, and be sure to check out our Community-Written Stories books and help us add to one of six stories we are writing and circulating this summer.
Writing Prompt for July 20th, 2021:
There is a reason why both vets and psychologists (probably spiritual advisors too) generally agree that taxidermizing your dead pets is a bad idea. First of all, a taxidermized pet never looks like the pet you lost. That spark is gone. The way in which the animal is preserved can't compensate for specific expressions or quirks that the original animal had. How can you truly move on or hold on to them when the best part about what made them, well, them is gone?
True, taxidermy is an ancient and revered artform. There are specific skills needed, scientific studies, and even competitions that can create astonishing results. But creating taxidermized creatures out of loved pets just feels like a reenactment of Psycho.
Preserving creatures in glass also has its drawbacks. Luckily for you and me, the creatures usually preserved in such cases usually don't hold the sentimental attachment that a pet would have. These are usually creatures that are being studied. But what if those people that do taxidermy their animals got a chance to do more?
So here is your prompt for the week:
Respond to or write a piece featuring: “Why grieve when you can keep your loved one encased in Forever Glass™?”
