Writing Prompts to Get You Started #7

Maybe you have absolutely no idea where to start but have always wanted to try being a writer. Maybe you want to write the great American novel or you thought you'd write a poem about hidden life of a grain of sand. Maybe you just need a little inspiration to get you started or you find yourself just a little stuck. Maybe you find yourself trying to break out of your comfort zone or mix things up at work. Whatever your reason for landing here, practicing a little creativity can impact your life in ways you didn't expect.

But let's be honest. Creativity is a muscle and it needs exercise to work properly. That's where this series comes in. With any luck, this series will get your creative juices flowing and get you thinking in ways you hadn't before. A new prompt will appear once or twice a week. It's up to you what you do with it.

Oh, and be sure to check out our Community-Written Stories books and help us add to one of six stories we are writing and circulating this summer.

Writing Prompt for June 18th, 2021:

We have the weekend. Let's make the most of it. It's time to get physical (and I don't mean the 80s song). This weekend, get out of your chair or off of your couch and do something outside. Go for a walk, ride a bike, fly a kite, play a pickup game of football or soccer, anything that gets your blood flowing and your heart pumping.

It has been scientifically proven that exercise and physical activity helps your brain to function better. It improves blood flow to the brain, lowers stress hormones, and improves memory. The same part of the brain that exercise helps improve memory also is in charge of our ability to imagine the future and think creatively.

Then there is that whole thing about your best ideas coming when you aren't trying so hard, aren't thinking about it. It's why you get seemingly great ideas when you're in the shower or heading off to sleep. Distract yourself. Let yourself be in the moment and maybe a solution to your story problem or a new idea for that poem or novel will emerge. After you come back in from your activity and hydrate yourself, sit down and either write about what you did, about something you saw, or about what you were thinking about when doing it, or whatever really comes to mind.

So here is your prompt for the weekend:

Do something active and fun. When you finish, sit down with your writing and see what comes out. It might surprise you.
