Writing Prompts to Get You Started #9

Maybe you have absolutely no idea where to start but have always wanted to try being a writer. Maybe you want to write the great American novel or you thought you'd write a poem about hidden life of a grain of sand. Maybe you just need a little inspiration to get you started or you find yourself just a little stuck. Maybe you find yourself trying to break out of your comfort zone or mix things up at work. Whatever your reason for landing here, practicing a little creativity can impact your life in ways you didn't expect.

But let's be honest. Creativity is a muscle and it needs exercise to work properly. That's where this series comes in. With any luck, this series will get your creative juices flowing and get you thinking in ways you hadn't before. A new prompt will appear once or twice a week. It's up to you what you do with it.

Oh, and be sure to check out our Community-Written Stories books and help us add to one of six stories we are writing and circulating this summer.

Writing Prompt for June 25th, 2021:

Truth be told, the angst ridden poem is a little bit of a teenage trope and overdone too, especially if done badly. However there is something secretly satisfying about writing a poem about a deep, dark secret that you would tell no one else. Especially if done in a way that only you know what you are talking about.

Maybe it's something you witnessed something you shouldn't have and/or kept quite on something you should have come forward with (anything from a crime to a crime of passion to hand caught in the cookie jar), or maybe you have a desire to try something you probably shouldn't indulge in (chocolate cake, anyone? ... you can of course go much darker, but I'm leaving that up to your imagination). Whatever the case, this is your chance to either be as explicit or as cryptic as you can get. Take some poetic liscence and write a poem.

So here is your prompt for the weekend:

Write a poem that admits a deep, dark secret of yours that you have never revealed to anyone. Or, if you are more of a prose person or working on a story already, write one that reveals the secret of one of your characters, from their perspective.
