‘The Minions: Rise of Gru’ is an improvement over its predecessor as well as ‘Despicable Me 3’. It is a relentless flurry of minion antics amidst a surprisingly sentimental and streamlined script. While some of the minions charm has faded by the 5th film featuring them, this outing does a valiant effort of keeping things fresh with genuine creative moments.
The film is sweet, funny, and most of the three stooge-esque gags and slapstick humor lands. The Steve Carell voiced character Gru has always gone underappreciated, being overshadowed by the minions. Though this isn’t his film, he is clearly needed to optimize the use of the minions themselves, not just in interaction and set ups, but for a cohesive narrative as well.
MY RATING 3.5/5 STARS
