In case you lost your directions or missed out on a kit, we have you covered. In this series, we will be showcasing past projects, in particular those that were originally released as Surprise Craftertunity kits at the library. So get ready to grab some spare materials and start crafting!
Finger-Knit Garlands
Here we have a program from December. It's an easy, fun project that is quick and can spruce up a place for pretty much any holiday or festive occasion, although this particular one was for the winter holidays.
I created these a lot as a child, but find them just as relaxing as an adult. Plus they look terrific as a finished project. Wrap them around your tree; drape them across your mantle; make a necklace or other piece of wearables out of them... the list is near endless. You could even make a rug out of these spiraled around one another.
Materials
Yarn (Bulkier is better)
Fingers (preferably your own, but to each their own ;-) )
Scissors
Directions
Start by creating a slip knot and pulling the loop snug over your pointer finger with the tail hanging behind your hand. Using the end leading to your main yarn, wrap a second loop around your middle finger. Then loop around each finger a second time.
(a) You’ll have two loops on each finger now. (b) Pull the lower loop (the one closer to your palm) on your pointer up and over the higher loop, and off of your finger so that it’s sitting behind your hand. Do the same with the lower loop on your middle finger.
Wrap the long part of the yarn again around your fingers, bringing it up between the pointer and middle, over and around the middle, then over and around the pointer, creating one new loop on each finger.
Repeat Step 2, pulling the lower loops over the higher loops and off your fingers. At this point, your thumb can let go of the tail. Then, tug gently on the tail to tighten your garland, and work the loops down on your fingers as you go.
Keep repeating. Loop the yarn around your fingers, pull the lower loops over the higher loops, and then tug.
When you reach your desired length, snip off about 6″ of yarn at the working end. Slip your fingers out of the loops, then pull the 6″ of yarn through the loops to secure the garland at this end.
