Paper Fun in the Summer Sun

I don’t know if it’s just my kids but we’ve hit that point of the summer where everyone is feeling a little antsy and bored. Art Cart crafts to the rescue! This week we are making paper fans and slithery straw snakes. If you were unable to pick up an art cart kit last week, both projects are made out of easy to find items.

Paper Fan: 2 Popsicle Sticks (or something similar) Glue or Tape Piece of paper (8 ½ x 11 works best)

Optional: items for decorating the paper (crayons, markers, stickers, etc).

1. Begin with an 8 1/2x11 piece of paper. If you want to draw a picture on your fan, now is the best time to do that. If you want to add stickers or glitter you might want to wait until after you’ve finished folding the paper.

2. Using the “accordion fold”, start at the widest side of the paper (otherwise the Popsicle sticks won’t fit) and fold about one inch of the paper up. Turn the paper over and fold another inch.

3. Once you have finished, with the folds together, fold the paper in half. It should look something like this.

4. Tape or glue the top edges together. Glue dots work really well for this if you have them. If you are using regular school glue or glue sticks you may need to hold it for a bit so it stays together.

5. Once the edges are glued together, attach the Popsicle sticks to the bottom edges. Now enjoy the cool breeze!

Slithery Snake (from https://iheartcraftythings.com/)

2 pipe cleaners

2 straws (paper or plastic will work)

Scrap paper in various colors

Glue or Glue dots

Scissors

Optional: googly eyes for the face, other decorations for the snake

1) Cut an oval in a piece of scrap paper (or whatever paper you might have laying around). Attach googly eyes or draw a snake face on the oval.

2) Cut out a tongue shape from a piece of paper and glue it to the bottom of the oval.

3) Twist two (or more if you want a really long snake), pipe cleaners together. 4) Cut straws into various lengths (you can use more straws if you are using extra pipe cleaners).

5) Thread the straw pieces onto the pipe cleaners—make sure to twist the pipe cleaner at the ends so that the straw pieces stay on!

6) Glue or tape the face onto a straw piece at the end of the pipe cleaner. Now you can bend and twist your snake so it “slithers” around!

Can you think of other animals to make? How about a butterfly or a grasshopper? Look around and maybe you can find some other recycled items that you can add to create an even bigger animal. Use your imagination and see what you can come up with. If you make something that you think is especially cool or fun feel free to share it with us! We would love to see what you come up with.
