Surprise Craftertunity! : Crazy Grannies & Joining Pieces (Crochet) - Part 2

In case you lost your directions or missed out on a kit, we have you covered. In this series, we will be showcasing past projects, in particular those that were originally released as Surprise Craftertunity kits at the library. So get ready to grab some spare materials and start crafting!

Last session we focused on the basic granny square. There are countless variations of various complexities. Below is the slightly more complicated Sunburst (or Starburst, depending on where you look) Granny Square.

Sunburst Granny Squares

Here are the written instructions:

Abbreviations:

sl st—slip stitch

ch—chain stitch

sc—single crochet

hdc—half-double crochet

dc—double crochet

tr—treble crochet

bo—bobble stitch

ps—puff stitch

CL—cluster stitch

sh—shell

yo—yarn over

Special Crochet Terms:

Puff Stitch: *yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull through stitch* three times (7 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook. Chain 1 to lock into place.

Bobble Stitch: Double crochet into the stitch where you are going to make your bobble stitch BUT leave the final loop on the hook. *yarn over, insert hook in next stitch and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops* 5 times (6 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

Shell Stitch: create multiple stitches in the same space/stitch. This pattern uses three per shell, some patterns will use more. This is the most frequent granny square technique. The corners of your squares are shell stitch, chain 3, shell stitch all in the same space.

Instructions:

Using your first color, create a slip knot and ch 5, join with a sl st (or start with a magic ring).

Round 1: ch 3 (this will count as your first DC) DC 15 into the center circle. (If using a magic ring, then pull tight.) Insert hook into the third chain from the hook (your original ch 3) sl st and fasten off. You should have 16 sts in total (including your ch 3).

Round 2: Attach your next color into any chain space of the previous row. Ch 2 and work a ps into that same stitch. Ps into each dc all the way around. Sl st into first ps and fasten off. You should have 16 ps in total.

Round 3: Attach your next color into any chain space of the previous round. Ch 2 and work a CL into the same stitch, ch 2. Work a CL into each ps, chaining 2 between each stitch. Sl st into the first CL and fsten off. You should have 16 CL in total.

Round 4: For this round we will be turning our circle into a square. Attach your next color into any chain space from the previous round.

First edge to your square: Ch 4, work 2 tr into same chain space. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 hdc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 tr into next chain space. Ch 3 (for the corner).

Second edge: Working in the same chain space (that you have just completed 3 tr) work 3 tr. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 hdc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 tr into next chain space. Ch 3 (for the corner).

Third edge: Working in the same chain space (that you have just completed 3 tr) work 3 tr. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 hdc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 tr into next chain space. Ch 3 (for the corner).

Forth edge: Working in the same chain space (that you have just completed 3 tr) work 3 tr. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Chain 1, work 3 hdc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 dc into next chain space. Ch 1, work 3 tr into next chain space. Ch 3 (for the corner). Sl st closed.
